Dear sir, please make me aware whether government institutions, such as national hospital provide dental brace treatment and related consultancy service. If yes, please mention a few of such institutions situated in the Colombo district, and the way of connecting with them to receive the said treatment. (i.e. : place appointments/waiting time) If dental braces are provided not for free, please be kind enough to mention the average cost of a non-removable metal or ceramic brace, inclusive of the orthodontist's charge. Thank you.

Dear Madhushan,

Yes, orthodontic specialty services (including braces) are available for the citizens of Sri Lanka at selected government hospitals. In the Western province, you may visit any of the following:

  1. The Dental Institute (DI) of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL)
  2. Lady Ridgeway hospital for children (orthodontic services are limited to children under 12 years)
  3. Colombo South Teaching Hospital (CSTH), Kalubowila
  4. Institute of Oral Health (IOH), Maharagama
  5. Teaching hospital, Ragama
  6. District General Hospital, Kalutara
  7. District General Hospital, Negombo

You need to be referred to this service by a dental surgeon. To do so, you may either register with the Out Patients Department (OPD) of the facility of your choice from where you will be referred to the respective Orthodontic unit, or may present a referral letter from any other dental surgeon.

After the initial examination and assessment, you may be wait-listed for definitive treatment depending on the availability of resources and materials. The wait time will differ from place to place and from time to time. However, urgent cases may be taken up sooner based on pre-defined priority criteria. There is no fee for consultation and treatment.

Orthodontic services are also available at:

  1. Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialized Children's Hospital - Peradeniya (orthodontic services are limited to children under 12 years)
  2. Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya
  3. Teaching hospital, Kandy
  4. Teaching hospital, Kurunegala
  5. District General Hospital, Badulla
  6. District General Hospital, Matara
  7. Karapitiya teaching hospital, Galle
  8. Teaching hospital, Anuradhapura
  9. District General Hospital, Chilaw
  10. District General Hospital, Ratnapura
  11. District General Hospital, Kegalle
  12. Teaching hospital, Jaffna
